Ever stood in your garage or spare room, gripped a driver, and wondered, “Could this be my very own golf haven?”

It’s a common fantasy for passionate players and with the rise of premium home simulators, it’s more achievable than ever.

But before you start dreaming of teeing off at Pebble Beach in your pyjamas, let’s talk space. Because getting your dimensions right isn’t just important,  it’s everything.

Why Golf Simulator Room Dimensions Matter More Than You Think

When you're building a serious simulator setup, the margin for error is razor-thin. We’re not talking about some off-the-shelf toy here, Golfsim Australia installations are powered by Uneekor: the same elite-level launch monitor tech used by coaches, club fitters and competitive players worldwide.

This hardware doesn’t just measure ball speed and spin. It tracks every nuance of your swing - clubface angle, path, attack angle, smash factor. But to perform at its peak, it needs room to breathe.

Low ceilings, tight corners, or obstructive beams? Those aren’t just inconveniences, they’re data killers.

And bad data? That leads to bad habits. You swing based on feedback that’s flawed and before long, you’re practising problems instead of fixing them.

So let’s break down what proper sim space looks like and why every centimetre counts.

How High Should Your Ceiling Be?

It’s one of the first questions we get  and one of the most important.

In this video we take a closer look at how high your ceiling needs to be before you purchase a golf simulator and give you a quick tip on how to figure this out before you spend any money!

In our YouTube guide, we walk you through how to test ceiling height with your driver and explain why 2.9 m is often the magic number.

The baseline: Aim for at least 2.9 m (9.5 ft) of true clearance. That suits the average golfer swinging a driver comfortably.

The gold standard: If you’ve got the room, 3 m+ (10 ft) gives you even more swing freedom and it’s ideal for those over 6'2" or players with a steeper swing plane.

But remember: It’s not just about raw height. It’s about your swing arc.

Pro tip: Stand in your intended hitting zone with your longest club. If your club comes within 10–15 cm of the ceiling, it’s not enough. And if you’ve got downlights, beams or ductwork overhead? You’ll need even more space.

Width: Let Your Swing Breathe

One of the most underrated dimensions in golf sim design is width. Sure, you may not need a full 6-car garage, but you do need enough room to swing naturally and move comfortably.

Minimum width: 3.5 m (11.5 ft) gets you swinging without fear of wall strikes.

Ideal width: 4 m+ (13 ft) gives you room for buffer nets, full follow-through and maybe even dual-handed play.

We recommend at least 50 cm (20 inches) of clearance on either side of your impact screen. This improves accuracy, safety and visual clarity - especially when paired with a centre-aligned Uneekor sensor mount.

Tight on space? Corner installs and side-mounted sensors can unlock layouts you might not think possible - another reason we customise every setup.

Depth: Give the Ball Room to Fly

Think of your simulator as a mini driving range and depth is what lets your shot data come to life.

At a minimum, you’ll want 5 m (16 ft) from tee to screen, that’s enough space for accurate tracking and safe follow-through.

But for the full experience? 6 m (20 ft) gives you:

  • Extra breathing room behind the player

  • Better projector throw distance (especially for 4K HD)

  • Space for dual mats, custom turf, or even a putting strip

If you’re using GSPro or a high-lumen projector setup, screen clarity depends heavily on throw distance. We’ll help calculate this during your design consult.

Quick tip: Always measure to the screen surface, not the wall behind it the screen adds 50 mm in thickness.

Designing a Space You’ll Actually Want to Spend Time In

Getting the dimensions right is just the first step. To truly create your own private golf retreat, the finish matters just as much as the function.

Here’s how we elevate a simulator from “man cave” to “premium play space”:

  • Acoustic Paneling & Soundproofing: Minimises echo, protects walls and keeps family-friendly peace during late-night sessions.

  • Lighting That Works With the Swing: Overhead LEDs on dimmers reduce shadows and prevent screen glare.

  • True Turf Feel: We use rebound mats and underlay systems that replicate fairway feel and protect your subfloor.

  • Concealed Cables: Our installs are sleek, no dangling HDMI cords or power bricks in sight.

  • Climate Control: 20–22 °C is optimal for both comfort and consistent club performance. A quiet split system does wonders.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space do I need for a home golf simulator?

We recommend a minimum room size of 2.9 m (H) x 3.5 m (W) x 5 m (D). This gives most golfers enough clearance to swing a driver freely, with safe buffer zones and proper depth for launch monitor tracking and screen projection. For a more comfortable, premium setup, aim for 3 m x 4 m x 6 m+.

What is the ideal ceiling height for a golf simulator?

The sweet spot is 3 metres (10 ft). While 2.9 m may be adequate for most players, golfers over 6'2" or those with upright swings will benefit from more headroom to avoid ceiling strikes and ensure clean sensor data.

Can I install a simulator in a single garage?

Potentially, but it depends on the exact dimensions and layout. Garages often have beams, lights or roller doors that interfere with clearance. We highly recommend a professional spatial audit before committing. In many cases, clever layout planning or minor structural tweaks can make it work.

What happens if my space is slightly under the recommended size?

We specialise in custom golf simulator designs, so if your room falls just short in one area, there may still be a solution. Offset mounts, low-profile screens and corner installations can help maximise limited space without compromising performance.

Do I need to worry about soundproofing?

If your simulator is near bedrooms or shared walls, it’s worth investing in acoustic paneling or wall insulation. Not only does it reduce noise, but it improves audio quality and protects surfaces from wayward shots.

What’s the difference between DIY and a Golfsim Australia custom install?

We take care of everything in-house from consultation and space planning to design, technology selection, and installation. You won’t need to coordinate trades or risk mismatched components. Plus, our Uneekor setups are finely calibrated for serious players who demand accuracy.

Can I try a simulator before I commit?

Absolutely. Our Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane demonstration facility is open by appointment for private, in-person demos. You can test the Uneekor system, experience GSPro gameplay and see firsthand how we tailor every build to fit lifestyle and space.

How long does the installation take?

Most installs are completed within 3–5 days once design is finalised and parts are ready. Larger or more complex builds may take a little longer. We’ll keep you fully informed at every stage of the process.

How do I know if my swing will fit?

One easy way: grab your driver and take a full swing where you plan to install the simulator. If the club clears with at least 10–15 cm to spare, you're likely in good shape. Still unsure? Book a design consult with our team and we’ll check it for you.
